About the Play

The Echo of Solitude

Loneliness, isolation, emptiness, longing—words born from the inner conflicts of the human soul. A woman sits, waiting for a single phone call from the lover who left. Her words reveal the intense hemorrhaging of the heart. Confronting her own self, or perhaps the phantom of that lover, before a mirror—or facing the emotions plastered across the walls—and then, arranging the lives of fish on dry land. Perhaps, in the tremors or sounds of a human voice, one might occasionally find their own true essence.

About the Playwright

Jean Cocteau (5 July 1889 – 11 October 1963) was a multi-talented French poet, playwright, filmmaker, novelist, painter and art critic. He was a prominent and influential name in 20th-century European art and literature. He left behind unique works in the world of cinema as well as literature and painting. His famous plays ‘La Machine Infernale’, ‘The Human Voice (La Voix Humaine)’, and ‘Orphée’ are considered important creations of modern theater. As a filmmaker, he achieved his greatest fame for poetic and abstract films such as ‘La Belle et la Bête’ (Beauty and the Beast, 1946) and ‘Orphée’ (1950). His work is closely linked to surrealism, the subconscious mind, and poetic theatrical language. Jean Cocteau was a bold voice of modernity in French literature. He created a new form by combining imagination, mystery and emotion in literature, painting and cinema. He died on October 11, 1963. However, his creativity still shines brightly in world theater and film literature.
